About Orientation

Is the online orientation mandatory and what is it for?

Yes, the online orientation is mandatory. The online orientation provides important information for first-time students who are planning to attend a Los Rios college. You are considered a first-time student if you have never attended a college or university and are new to the Los Rios Community College District.

The online orientation will give an overview on topics such as academic expectations, financial assistance, student rights and responsibilities, and student support services.

I am a continuing college student but would still like to complete the online orientation. How do I self-register into the online orientation?

Login to D2L using your student ID and password. Once on your D2L homepage you can self- register for the course by taking the following steps: In the upper right hand corner select Self Registration. A list of courses appear, select "Los Rios Online Orientation SR".

  • Step 1: View Course Offering. Select the "Register" button in the bottom right hand corner.
  • Step 2: Enter Registration Information. Select the "Submit" button in the bottom right hand corner.
  • Step 3: Confirmation. Select the "Finish" button in the bottom right hand corner.

You are now registered for Online Orientation, and can begin the class anytime by selecting the "Los Rios Online Orientation" link under My Courses on your D2L Homepage.

When I log in to D2L to access the orientation, I do not see a link. What should I do?

The "Los Rios Online Orientation" link should appear in the center of the page. If you don't see the big green "START" button in the middle of the page after you log in, it could be because you are not required to complete the orientation based on your educational history. If you would like, you can still complete the orientation by using the "self-registration" option in D2L. Instructions on how to self-register can be found by going to the following Link Self-Registration Instructions for Online Orientation.

Aside from the online orientation, what else do I need to do?

The online orientation is the first step towards successful enrollment at Los Rios. Afterwards, you will need to complete the assessment and meet with a counselor to complete an education plan. The online orientation will provide more details.

More information is available at http://success.losrios.edu.

Why should I complete the mandatory steps and when do they need to be done?

Completing all of the mandatory steps will determine your enrollment date. First-time students who complete the three steps will be able to register for classes during Priority 1 enrollment. Having Priority 1 enrollment provides more flexibility, availability, and options with course selections.

To be eligible for Priority 1 enrollment for the Fall semester, all mandatory steps must be completed by April 1st.

To be eligible for Priority 1 enrollment for the Spring semester, all mandatory steps must be completed by November 1st.

What happens if I don't complete every step (orientation, assessment, and counseling) at all or before the registration deadline?

You can still attend a Los Rios college if you do not complete the steps, but your priority date to register for classes will be negatively affected.

First-time students who do not complete the three steps will receive Priority 2 enrollment. Students in Priority 2 enrollment must wait until after Priority 1 enrollment ends. Although there will still be classes available during Priority 2, you may have limited selections.

The following semester, all first-time students who did not fulfill the mandatory requirements will be placed in Open Enrollment. This is the last enrollment period.

When can I complete the online orientation?

After you receive a Los Rios student ID number, you will be given access to Los Rios Desire2Learn (D2L / eLearning) the following day. D2L is the online system where the orientation can be viewed and your completion of each module is tracked. Once you successfully log on to D2L, you can begin the orientation immediately. The online orientation is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days per week.

Is there a time limit to complete the online orientation?

No, you will not be timed on the online orientation. The online orientation will take at least 20 minutes to complete.

Am I able to start and stop anytime during the online orientation? Will my information be saved?

Since the modules can be viewed separately, you can start and stop anytime during the online orientation. Your information will be saved and you will not need to repeat the modules that are already completed.

Do I have to do the online orientation every semester or every year?

No. You only have to complete the online orientation once regardless of which Los Rios college you attend. You can go back and review the information at any time.

What if I don't pass the quizzes on the online orientation?

There are quizzes included in the online orientation to help you remember information that is important to all first-time students. If you do not select the correct answer for any of the questions, you will have the opportunity to re-take the quizzes until you have answered the questions correctly. The quizzes are multiple choice and the answers can be found within the modules. You cannot skip the quizzes; you must pass the quizzes to continue to the next module.

How long do I have access to the online orientation?

You will have access to the online orientation for one full year. However, you are encouraged to complete the online orientation before the deadline to qualify for Priority 1 enrollment. Once you have completed the online orientation, you can review any of the modules again without having to retake the quizzes.

How do I know when I have completed the orientation?

When you have completed the last module and passed the quizzes, the system will indicate that you have completed the online orientation. Also, an electronic Certificate of Completion will be sent to your Los Rios Gmail account within approximately 24 hours of finishing the orientation. You will be provided with information about next steps you will need to take and will also receive a follow-up e-mail.

What options do I have for completing the orientation in a way that suits my learning needs?

D2L (the online system where you can access the orientation) meets several standards for accessibility. Additionally, Los Rios provides two different options for reviewing the content of the orientation, including text (English language) and closed-caption video (multiple language translations are available).
